reliable garbage disposal repairmen

Most homes nowadays have garbage disposal units, but people generally tend to misuse them by discarding large pieces of garbage or food residue. However, the garbage disposal is an appliance intended to shred small pieces of food leftover from a meal rather than act as an all-purpose garbage can. A garbage disposal that has been overloaded with large food particles can get damaged, clogging the kitchen sink, and jamming the pipes underneath. Many of the plumbing service calls that we receive at Drain Go Plumbing are for garbage disposal repair services.

If you have a sink that is clogged or that takes a long period of time to drain, you are definitely in need of thorough kitchen drain cleaning. At Drain Go Plumbing we have years of experience in drain cleaning, repairing garbage disposal units, and even replacing disposals if they are beyond repair. Whatever the nature of your issue, we are at your service to help you get your sink working again in no time.

What are the common garbage disposal problems?

Here are 5 of the most common garbage disposal problems you may encounter:

  • Jammed garbage disposal
The garbage disposal is built only to handle soft organic waste. If hard food residue such as bones gets into the disposal, this could cause it to jam and be unable to work properly.
  • Leaking
This problem can happen when screws or gaskets get loose.
  • Loss of Power
If your garbage disposal seems to be in good condition but is not turning on even when connected to a power source, either the switch or the machine itself may be damaged.
  • Clogged garbage disposal
An obstruction may be lodged inside the disposal, causing slow drainage.
  • Disposal blades not moving
If the garbage disposal is not clogged, but the blades still would not turn, this may indicate damage to the machine itself.

When is repair or replacement needed?

There are certain instances when a repair is all that you need for your garbage disposal. Situations such as jams or clogs may easily be taken care of by yourself. Calling for a professional, however, is your best option if you feel uncomfortable at times like when electricals are involved. It would be wiser for you to hire someone to fix it rather than causing more damage to yourself and your machine.

Many people have the assumption that replacing a garbage disposal is expensive. This is not true in every case. Frequent repairs on an old unit, as well as ordering specific parts for an outdated system can be costly and time-consuming. Adding up that back-and-forth ritual plus the cost of parts may be more expensive than a brand-new disposal unit in the long run.

At Drain Go plumbing, we can provide you with a high-quality unit at a very affordable price. We do our installations quickly and efficiently. We will make sure your new garbage disposal will function at its best for years to come.

Whether it be minor repairs or a complete replacement, our knowledgeable plumbing technicians will always be honest with you and tell you the exact reason why one service is needed over the other.

How do you prevent nasty smells from your garbage disposal?

It is always wise to clean your garbage disposal once in a while. This will prevent nasty smells from building up in your unit. A few measures to ensure that your garbage disposal stays fresh-smelling include the following:

  • Take a lemon or orange and chuck it into the disposal. The oils and juice from the fruits and peels will clean the walls and leave a fresh, natural, long-lasting scent.
  • You can also toss vinegar frozen in ice cube trays down the disposal to keep your blades sharp while killing odor-causing bacteria at the same time.
  • Pour baking soda into the drain and let it sit for several hours before running the water.
  • For really stubborn odors, try pouring 3-4 tablespoons of Borax down the drain and let it sit for an hour before turning on the hot water to flush it away. Borax is a relatively safe household cleaning product.

Taking care of your garbage disposal on a daily basis will ensure that it will run as smoothly as possible.

Taking care of the repairs and even replacement of your garbage disposal is our commitment to you. Drain Go Plumbing is your all-around partner in efficient kitchen fixture repairs.

Garbage Disposal Repair Service

We believe that trying to repair your own garbage disposal unit without any prior plumbing experience is dangerous. However, if you have some basic knowledge of how your unit operates and you would like to try to repair it on your own, you might want to try the following steps:

  • Turn on your garbage disposal unit and listen to hear whether you can hear it hum. If it hums but it’s not operating properly, it is possible that a jam has occurred.
  • Press the reset button that is usually found at the bottom of the garbage disposal.
  • If the reset button doesn’t work, first make sure that the power switch is turned off and then use a flashlight to shine light into the drain.
  • Try to find the object that is jamming at your disposal. This could be something like a coin, a staple, or even a piece of plastic.
  • If you have spotted the object causing the jam, try to remove it by using something like metal pliers. Never put your hands into the garbage disposal!
  • Some garbage disposal units have hex wrenches taped to the underside of the disposer. If so, check for a slot where this wrench can be inserted and turned in order for the jam to be cleared.
